- Represent any number from 0 to 20 on the abacus
- Perform single-digit addition and subtraction independently
- Begin building speed with mental calculation exercises

Lesson Breakdown
- Name every part of the abacus: frame, rod, upper bead, lower bead, dividing bar
- Explain what each part does
- Understand that each rod holds one column of numbers
- Understand that each lower bead = 1
- Push lower beads up to show numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4
- Read a number by counting beads touching the bar
- Know that 1 upper bead = 5
- Show the number 5 using the upper bead
- Understand why one upper bead replaces five lower beads
- Understand that 6 = upper bead (5) + 1 lower bead
- Build numbers 6, 7, 8, 9 by combining upper and lower beads
- Read numbers 6–9 at a glance on the abacus
- Recognise any number 0–9 on the abacus without counting beads one by one
- Build any number 0–9 quickly and accurately
- Correct mistakes and try again confidently
- Identify the ones rod (rightmost) and the tens rod (second from right)
- Understand that each rod has its own place value
- Read a two-rod position as a two-digit number
- Build each number from 10 to 20 using two rods
- Read any teen number from the abacus
- Understand that 10 = 1 ten + 0 ones
- Add two numbers whose sum is 5 or less
- Show first number, add more beads for the second number
- Read the final bead position for the answer
- Add two numbers with a sum between 6 and 10
- Swap lower beads for the upper bead when reaching 5
- Confirm the answer by reading the bead position
- Understand subtraction = removing beads from active position
- Subtract 1–4 by pushing lower beads down
- Subtract 5 by pushing the upper bead back up
- Apply all Level 1 skills: parts, place value, addition, subtraction
- Work through mixed problems with confidence
- Prepare for the Level 1 certificate assessment
Parent tip
Each lesson is designed to be completed in a single sitting. Work through one lesson per session — 3 sessions per week is the ideal pace. After Lesson 5, run a quick recap by asking your child to show you any number from 0 to 9. After Lesson 10, move on to Abacus Level 2.
