Parent tips for this age

  • ๐Ÿ’กSit with your child for the first 3 lessons โ€” they will be more confident once they see you're engaged.
  • ๐Ÿ’กAfter each lesson, ask: 'Show me what you learned today.' They will demonstrate on an imaginary abacus.
  • ๐Ÿ’กDon't worry about speed at this age โ€” accuracy and enjoyment come first. Speed builds naturally.

Age 9โ€“11

Build speed and mental power

Start here

Abacus Level 2 or Vedic Maths

Children who know basic arithmetic are ready for both. Abacus Level 2 deepens mental calculation. Vedic Maths introduces elegant shortcuts.

Progression path

  • 1Abacus Level 2 โ†’ Level 3 โ†’ Mental Bridge

  • 5Money Basics (practical money habits โ€” saving, budgeting, smart choices)
  • 6Study Skills in the AI Era (how to actually study โ€” active recall, revision, focus)

Parent tips for this age

  • ๐Ÿ’กChallenge them: 'Can you do 98 ร— 97 in your head?' โ€” then show them the Vedic method. Curiosity drives retention.
  • ๐Ÿ’กUse the Worksheet Generator for 10 minutes of timed practice twice a week โ€” children this age love beating their own score.
  • ๐Ÿ’กIf they complete Abacus Level 3, move straight to the Mental Bridge course โ€” it trains visualisation and is the natural next step before mental abacus speed work.

How to structure a week

A simple pattern that works for any course, any age group.

Day 112โ€“18 min

Open lesson + work through guided interactive practice

Day 2 or 35โ€“10 min

Revision using a tool (Abacus Visualiser, Mental Math Challenge, etc.)

Day 4 or 512โ€“18 min

Next lesson โ€” or a printable practice sheet if revising

Note: Short, consistent sessions beat long irregular ones. 12 minutes three times a week is more effective than an hour on Sunday. Our lessons are intentionally kept short for this reason.

What to do after a course is completed

1

Earn the certificate

Every completed course earns a printable certificate of completion. Print it and put it up somewhere visible โ€” recognition matters.

2

Move to the next course

Our courses are designed as a progression. After Abacus Level 1 โ†’ Level 2 โ†’ Level 3. After Vedic Maths, try AI Basics. The platform's recommendation engine will suggest the next course automatically.

Use tools for ongoing practice

Tools like the Worksheet Generator and Mental Math Challenge are designed for daily 5โ€“10 minute practice outside of courses. They don't require starting a new course.

What progress looks like

We do not show fake completion percentages or inflated scores. Here is what honest progress actually looks like โ€” and what you can observe as a parent.

After Abacus Level 1

  • โœ“Your child can read a bead diagram and say the number instantly
  • โœ“They can add and subtract single-digit numbers on a real or imaginary abacus
  • โœ“They understand upper and lower beads, and can demonstrate them to you

After Abacus Level 2

  • โœ“They solve two-digit problems using complement rules without hesitation
  • โœ“They can explain why 4 + 8 uses a 10-complement (not just do it mechanically)
  • โœ“Drill speed improves over weeks โ€” not overnight

After Vedic Maths

  • โœ“They can multiply two-digit numbers faster than with long multiplication
  • โœ“They enjoy showing you shortcut methods โ€” this is a reliable sign of understanding
  • โœ“They apply different sutras to different problem shapes without being told which one

After English Confidence

  • โœ“Your child can greet someone, introduce themselves, and ask basic questions in English
  • โœ“They form sentences using correct word order (S-V-O) without defaulting to Tamil order
  • โœ“They can read a short English passage and answer comprehension questions about it

What is normal

  • โœ“Revisiting lessons 2โ€“3 times before mastery is typical, not a problem
  • โœ“Speed varies by child โ€” some finish a level in 3 weeks, others take 8 weeks
  • โœ“Asking to redo a drill is a positive sign โ€” it means they want to improve

The best sign of learning is when your child can explain a concept to you in their own words. If they can teach it, they understand it.

Supporting practice at home

How long should each session be?

10โ€“18 minutes is ideal for children under 12. Each guided lesson takes 8โ€“12 minutes. The interactive drills add another 3โ€“5 minutes. After that, a short practice tool session is enough.

What if my child finds a lesson difficult?

That's completely normal. The interactive drills at the end of each lesson give immediate feedback. Encourage your child to redo the drill โ€” not the full lesson โ€” until they feel confident. You can also use the Abacus Visualiser or Vedic Calculator tools to reinforce the concept.

Should I sit with my child or let them learn independently?

For ages 6โ€“8, sit together for the first 2โ€“3 lessons. After that, they are usually confident enough to learn independently. For ages 9+, independent learning is fine from lesson 1 โ€” check in at the end to ask what they learned.

How do I know if my child is ready for the next course?

Complete all lessons in the current course and pass the assessment. The platform's dashboard shows completion percentage and the WhatNext feature suggests the next course automatically.

Is there a Tamil-medium option?

Yes. All lessons include Tamil lesson titles, Tamil terminology, and bilingual content throughout. The platform is designed for Tamil-speaking children โ€” the medium of instruction is bilingual (English + Tamil), with full Tamil terminology for every concept.

Have a specific question?

Ask TamilGenius โ€” type any question about courses, tools, or what your child should learn next. It works entirely in your browser with no AI cost.

โ€œWhich course for my 9-year-old?โ€โ€œWhat should I print for Abacus L1?โ€โ€œWhat comes after Vedic Maths?โ€
