Prerequisite
Abacus Level 1 must be complete before starting Level 2. Your child should be able to show any number 0–20 on the abacus without counting beads and perform single-digit addition and subtraction confidently.
What your child will learn
- Understand and instantly recall all 5-complement and 10-complement pairs
- Use the 5-rule to add and subtract when direct bead moves are blocked
- Use the 10-rule to carry to the tens rod and borrow back from it
- Choose the correct rule automatically for any two-digit problem
- Build mental calculation speed through structured complement drills
- Complete the Level 2 certificate assessment with confidence
Lesson Breakdown
- Understand what a complement pair is and why it exists on the abacus
- Recall all 5-complement pairs: 1↔4, 2↔3
- Recall all 10-complement pairs: 1↔9, 2↔8, 3↔7, 4↔6, 5↔5
- Recognise when the lower beads are full and 5-rule adding is needed
- Add using the 5-complement: push upper bead down, remove complement's lower beads
- Solve problems like 3+3, 4+2, 4+4 using the 5-rule
- Recognise when the 5-rule is needed for subtraction
- Subtract using the 5-complement: push upper bead up, add complement lower beads
- Solve problems like 6−3, 8−4, 7−2 using the 5-rule
- Recognise when the ones rod overflows and 10-rule adding is needed
- Carry 1 bead to the tens rod while removing the 10-complement from ones
- Solve problems like 7+4, 8+5, 9+6 using the 10-rule
- Recognise when ones rod can't give enough and borrowing is needed
- Borrow from tens rod: remove 1 tens bead, add 10-complement to ones
- Solve problems like 11−5, 14−7, 16−9 using the 10-rule
- Identify which rule each problem needs before calculating
- Apply 5-rule and 10-rule in the same calculation without confusion
- Solve mixed problems selecting the right rule automatically
- Drill complement rules until responses are automatic (under 2 seconds per answer)
- Set a personal speed target and measure improvement
- Identify which complement family still needs more practice
- Apply all Level 2 complement rules across a comprehensive mixed problem set
- Demonstrate mastery of 5-rule and 10-rule adding and subtracting
- Prepare for the Level 2 certificate assessment
Parent tip
Level 2 is where most children slow down — not because the content is hard, but because complement pairs need daily repetition to become automatic. Print the Level 2 Complement Drills sheet once a week and use it for 5 minutes every morning. By week 4, you will see the speed clearly.
Track Your Progress
Colour each box when the lesson is complete. All 8 coloured = ready for Level 3!
