Prerequisite
Abacus Level 2 must be complete. Your child should recall all complement pairs instantly and apply 5-rule and 10-rule adding and subtracting without hesitation before starting Level 3.
What your child will learn
- Extend the abacus to three rods and work fluently with numbers up to 999
- Apply all complement rules (5-rule, 10-rule) on the hundreds rod as well as ones and tens
- Handle carry and borrow across all three rods, including double-carry and double-borrow
- Solve cascade problems where one adjustment triggers another
- Build 3-digit calculation speed through focused drills
- Complete the Level 3 certificate and prepare for Mental Abacus Bridge
Lesson Breakdown
- Extend place value understanding to the hundreds rod (×100)
- Build any 3-digit number using three rods
- Read a three-rod abacus position as a three-digit number
- Add two 3-digit numbers when each rod can be handled directly
- Work systematically: hundreds → tens → ones
- Verify the result by reading the full three-rod position
- Subtract a 3-digit number when each rod can give enough directly
- Work systematically through hundreds, tens, and ones rods
- Confirm the result after all three rods are adjusted
- Apply the 5-complement rule on any of the three rods
- Recognise when 5-rule is needed on the tens or hundreds rod
- Complete mixed 3-digit problems using 5-rule on any rod
- Carry from ones to tens when ones rod overflows in a 3-digit problem
- Carry from tens to hundreds when tens rod overflows
- Handle double-carry problems where both transitions happen
- Borrow from tens to ones when ones cannot give enough
- Borrow from hundreds to tens when tens cannot give enough
- Handle double-borrow problems systematically
- Handle problems where a carry or borrow on one rod triggers another on the next rod
- Recognise cascade patterns before they happen
- Complete multi-step carries and borrows without losing place
- Apply any combination of direct, 5-rule, carry, and borrow rules
- Select the correct approach for each rod before moving beads
- Work through 20+ mixed problems at an even pace
- Increase calculation speed with timed 3-digit drills
- Set and beat a personal speed target
- Identify which rule combination is still slowing you down
- Demonstrate full mastery of all Level 3 skills
- Complete a comprehensive mixed 3-digit problem set with confidence
- Take the first step toward the Mental Abacus Bridge course
Parent tip
Level 3 is the final physical abacus level. The key challenge is not the new rules — it is carrying them all in working memory across three rods simultaneously. Children who move through Level 3 slowly, one lesson at a time, retain far more than those who rush. After completing Level 3, the Mental Abacus Bridge course removes the physical beads entirely. That is the real prize.
