Skill checklists to help parents decide if the child is ready for the next course.
Structured Home Practice — Course Readiness Assessment Checklist
Use these checklists before starting a new course or level. Each transition has specific skills that should be demonstrated before moving on.
Ready for Abacus Level 2?
Can read any bead position 0-9 in under 2 seconds
Can build any number 10-20 on two rods without help
Can add two single-digit numbers (sum ≤ 9) on the abacus
Can subtract within 9 on the abacus
Understands that upper bead = 5 and uses the upper bead swap
Scores 80%+ on L1 bead position drills consistently
Can explain what each part of the abacus does
Not yet ready?
If any of the above are not checked, continue with L1 Support Pack drills before moving to Level 2.
Ready for Abacus Level 3?
Knows all 5-complement pairs (1+4, 2+3, 3+2, 4+1) from memory
Knows all 10-complement pairs (1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5) from memory
Can apply 5-complement rules for addition and subtraction
Can apply 10-complement rules for addition and subtraction
Can do two-digit addition with carry
Can do two-digit subtraction with borrow
Scores 80%+ on Progress Pack complement drills
Can identify errors in worked problems (error checking skill)
Not yet ready?
If any of the above are not checked, use the Abacus Progress Pack to strengthen weak areas before Level 3.
Ready for Mental Abacus?
Can complete L3 speed drills within time limits
Can visualise single-digit bead positions with eyes closed
Can do simple addition mentally without physical abacus
Physical abacus technique is fast and automatic
Scores 85%+ on Mastery Bundle bead position practice
Can handle numbers up to 100 on the abacus
Not yet ready?
If mental visualisation is weak, continue with physical abacus work. Mental bridge should not be forced.
Ready for Vedic Maths?
Comfortable with multiplication tables up to 10x10
Understands place value (ones, tens, hundreds)
Can do basic mental addition and subtraction
Has curiosity about number patterns and shortcuts
Age 8+ recommended (younger children may find it abstract)
Can follow multi-step instructions
Not yet ready?
Vedic Maths requires a foundation in basic arithmetic. Ensure multiplication tables and place value are solid first.
Ready for English Confidence — Builder?
Can introduce self and family in English (name, age, family members)
Uses correct articles (a, an, the) most of the time
Builds Subject-Verb-Object sentences without reverting to Tamil word order
Knows 15+ common verbs and can form simple present tense sentences
Can ask questions using What/Where/Who/When/How/Why
Can read a 60–80 word passage and answer basic comprehension questions
Completed the Foundations capstone (Lesson 8) or equivalent
Not yet ready?
If basic S-V-O sentence building or article usage is still inconsistent, continue practising with the Foundations course and Conversation Prompt Cards before moving to Builder.
Ready for Money Basics for Teens?
Can explain the difference between price and value
Applies the 3-question spending test before purchases
Correctly classifies needs vs wants in different contexts
Has set at least one saving goal with amount and timeframe
Understands the 3-part budget: needs → savings → wants
Completed the Kids capstone (My Money Plan) with 5+ rules
Age 12+ recommended for Teens content (digital payments, banking)

If the child cannot consistently apply needs-vs-wants classification or the 3-question test, revisit Money Basics for Kids Lessons 2 and 5 before progressing to the Teens course.
Ready for Cyber Smart?
Uses the internet regularly (games, videos, school work)
Has or will soon have access to a personal device or social media
Can read and understand short instructions independently
Parent is available to discuss scenarios and co-sign the Family Safety Agreement
Age 8+ recommended (younger children may not yet encounter online risks independently)
No specific course prerequisite — this course works standalone
Not yet ready?
Cyber Smart has no academic prerequisite. If the child is under 8, consider doing the course together as a family activity rather than self-paced.
Ready for Study Skills in the AI Era?
Currently doing regular homework or exam preparation
Has experienced 'studying a lot but forgetting' at least once
Can sit for 15+ minutes on a single task without needing redirection
Has access to a phone or device that could be a distraction during study
Age 10+ recommended (requires self-awareness about study habits)
No specific course prerequisite — this course works standalone
Not yet ready?
Study Skills works best when the child already has a study routine that isn't working well. If they don't yet have regular homework, this course may feel abstract. Wait until school demands increase.
