Parent Observation Notes Guide
Parent Observation Notes Guide
What to watch for during sessions: engagement signs, confusion signals, when to intervene.
Structured Home Practice — Parent Observation Notes Guide
What to watch for during practice sessions, how to read engagement signals, and when to intervene versus step back. Includes a recording template.
What to Watch For During Sessions
Speed
Is the child getting faster over time? Are they pausing less between problems?
Accuracy
What percentage are correct? Which types of problems cause errors?
Technique
Are they using the correct complement rules? Or falling back to counting?
Confidence
Do they start problems readily? Or hesitate and look for help?
Stamina
How many problems before attention drops? Is this improving?
Independence
Can they work without prompting? Do they self-correct errors?
Engagement Signs vs Confusion Signals
Signs of Engagement
- Leans forward, focused on the problem
- Moves beads confidently without looking at parent
- Says 'I got it!' or asks for the next problem
- Self-corrects without being told
- Tries to beat their previous time or score
- Asks questions about why a rule works
Signs of Confusion / Disengagement
- Stares at the problem without starting
- Repeatedly looks at parent for confirmation
- Random answers without working through steps
- Physical restlessness (fidgeting, looking away)
- Says 'I can't do this' or 'this is too hard'
- Frequent erasures or starting over
When to Intervene vs When to Step Back
If: Child is making the same error repeatedly
INTERVENE: Gently point out the pattern. Reteach the specific technique.
If: Child is slow but getting answers right
STEP BACK: Speed comes with practice. Accuracy first, speed second.
If: Child is frustrated and wants to stop
INTERVENE: Switch to an easier problem. End on a success. Keep it positive.
If: Child makes an occasional error but mostly correct
STEP BACK: Some errors are normal. Review wrong answers at the end, not during.
If: Child is using finger counting instead of mental abacus
INTERVENE: Gently redirect to visualising beads. They may need more physical abacus practice first.
If: Child is racing through and making careless errors
INTERVENE: Slow them down. Accuracy before speed. Ask them to check each answer.
Observation Recording Template
