Lesson Plans with Timing Guide
Lesson Plans with Timing Guide
Structured lesson plans: warm-up, teach, practice, wrap-up with exact timing.
Teacher Classroom Bundle — Lesson Plans with Timing Guides
4 sample lesson plans (one per level/course) with structured timing: Warm-up (5 min), Teach (15 min), Practice (15 min), Wrap-up (5 min). Adaptable to your classroom needs.
Lesson Plan: Abacus Level 1
Topic: Introduction to the Abacus — Parts and Numbers 0-4
Warm-Up
(5 min)Ask students: 'Has anyone seen an abacus before? What do you think it does?'
Notes: Build excitement. Show a physical abacus. Let students touch it.
Teach
(15 min)Name each part: frame, rod, upper bead (=5), lower beads (=1 each), dividing bar. Demonstrate numbers 0-4.
Notes: Use the TamilGenius L1 lesson on screen as support. Pause after each part for students to identify it on their own abacus.
Practice
(15 min)Students build numbers 0-4 on their abacus. Teacher calls out a number, students show it. Then: Bead Position Drills Page 1 (written).
Notes: Walk around and check each student. Common errors: pushing upper bead instead of lower. Pair fast students with those struggling.
Wrap-Up
(5 min)Quick review: 'Show me 3! Show me 0! Show me 4!' Game: fastest student to show the correct number wins.
Notes: End on a positive note. Assign HW 1 for home practice.
Lesson Plan: Abacus Level 2
Topic: 5-Complement Rules — Addition
Warm-Up
(5 min)Quick review: 'Show me 7 on the abacus. How did you make it? Now try to add 3 more lower beads — what happens?'
Notes: This leads to the discovery that lower beads max out at 4. Perfect introduction to why we need complement rules.
Teach
(15 min)Explain: when lower beads are full, use the 5-complement. Demo: 4+3 = push upper bead down, remove 2 lower beads (5-comp of 3 = 2). Show all 5-comp pairs.
Notes: Use the TamilGenius L2 lesson on screen. Write complement pairs on the board: 1+4, 2+3, 3+2, 4+1. Have students copy these.
Practice
(15 min)5-Complement Drills (from Progress Pack). Students work through Page 1 with teacher circulating. Then Page 2 independently.
Notes: Key errors to watch: removing the addend instead of the complement. Remind: 'What is the 5-complement of the number you are adding?'
Wrap-Up
(5 min)Pop quiz: call out 5-complement pairs for students to answer. Speed drill: 10 problems on the board, students solve on abacus.
Notes: Assign HW 1 (5-Complement). Students who scored below 7/10 on drills should redo Page 1 at home.
Lesson Plan: Abacus Level 3
Topic: Multi-Digit Operations and Mental Visualisation
Warm-Up
(5 min)Speed challenge: 10 two-digit addition problems from the Speed Drills. Time: 3 minutes. Record scores.
Notes: This sets baseline speed. Students who finish early help grade their neighbour's sheet.
Teach
(15 min)Introduce mental visualisation: 'Close your eyes. Picture the number 7 on the abacus. Can you see it?' Guided visualisation of single digits, then two digits.
Notes: Some students will struggle — this is normal. Start with physical abacus in front of them, eyes open, then eyes closed.
Practice
(15 min)Flash Visualization drills (from Mental Bridge Pack). Teacher shows bead diagrams, students write numbers from memory. Then: 5 mental addition problems (no abacus).
Notes: Pair students who can visualise with those who cannot. The stronger student describes what they see to help the other.
Wrap-Up
(5 min)Class discussion: 'How clear is your mental image? 1-5 scale.' Record responses for differentiation in next lesson.
Notes: Assign mental practice homework. Students at Stage 1-2 should continue physical abacus. Stage 3+ can start mental drills.
Lesson Plan: Vedic Maths
Topic: Nikhilam Method — Multiplication Near a Base
Warm-Up
(5 min)Ask: 'What is 9 x 8? How did you solve it?' Let students share different methods. Then: 'I will show you a method that makes this incredibly fast.'
Notes: Build intrigue. Vedic methods feel like magic to students. Leverage that curiosity.
Teach
(15 min)Demonstrate Nikhilam with base 10: write 9 and 8, note deficiencies (-1, -2), cross-subtract (9-2=7 or 8-1=7), multiply deficiencies (1x2=2). Answer: 72.
Notes: Do 3-4 examples. Then show base 100: 98x97. Students follow along step by step. Write the formula pattern on the board.
Practice
(15 min)HW 2 problems (Nikhilam) done in class. Students work in pairs — one solves, one checks. Then: individual timed drill.
Notes: Common error: forgetting to pad the right portion with zeros (e.g., 2x3=6, but need 06 for base 100). Emphasise this.
Wrap-Up
(5 min)Challenge: 'Who can solve 97x96 in under 10 seconds?' Demonstrate, then let students try. Introduce digit sum checking as a verification tool.
Notes: Assign HW 2. For fast students: try base 1000 problems as extension.
