Parent Handout Sheets
Parent Handout Sheets
One handout per level explaining what the child will learn and how to support at home.
Teacher Classroom Bundle — Parent Handout Sheets
Professional handouts for parents explaining what their child will learn, how to support at home, and what to expect at each level. Print and distribute at the start of each course.
Parent Handout: Abacus Level 1
Abacus Level 1 — Information for Parents
What Your Child Will Learn
- All parts of the abacus and what each part does
- How to read and build numbers 0-20 using bead positions
- Simple addition and subtraction within 9
- The concept that upper bead = 5 and lower beads = 1 each
- Place value (tens and ones) using two rods
How You Can Support at Home
- Provide a physical abacus for practice at home (any standard soroban-style abacus)
- Let your child show you what they learned after each lesson — teaching reinforces learning
- Complete the assigned homework sheets together — 10 minutes is enough
- Praise effort, not just correct answers — building confidence matters at this stage
- Use the TamilGenius Abacus Explorer tool for fun interactive practice
What to Expect
- Week 1-2: Learning parts and basic numbers. Expect slow speed, some confusion with upper bead.
- Week 3-4: Building speed with number recognition. Should identify 0-9 within 3 seconds.
- Week 5-6: Starting addition and subtraction. The 'upper bead swap' is a common hurdle.
- Week 7-8: Gaining confidence. By end of level, your child should handle any 0-20 operation.
Parent Handout: Abacus Level 2
Abacus Level 2 — Information for Parents
What Your Child Will Learn
- 5-complement rules for addition and subtraction
- 10-complement rules for carrying and borrowing
- Two-digit addition and subtraction on the abacus
- Error checking and identifying wrong technique application
- Speed and fluency in mental number operations
How You Can Support at Home
- Help your child memorise complement pairs (1+4=5, 2+3=5, etc.) — use flashcards
- Practice the complement drills from the Progress Pack 2-3 times per week
- If your child confuses rules, ask: 'Are the lower beads full? Then it is the 5-rule.'
- Do not rush — mastery of complements at this stage is crucial for all future levels
- Use the weekly check-in form to track what is working and what needs adjustment
What to Expect
- Week 1-2: Learning 5-complement rules. Expect confusion between add and subtract directions.
- Week 3-4: Learning 10-complement rules. Two types of rules can be overwhelming.
- Week 5-6: Practising carry and borrow. Speed improves once rules become automatic.
- Week 7-8: Mixed operations. Your child should choose the correct rule without prompting.
Parent Handout: Abacus Level 3
Abacus Level 3 — Information for Parents
What Your Child Will Learn
- Multi-digit addition and subtraction (numbers up to 100)
- Speed calculation with timed challenges
- Beginning of mental abacus — transitioning from physical to mental
- Chain calculations (multiple operations in sequence)
- Self-assessment and independent practice skills
How You Can Support at Home
- Encourage mental visualisation practice — even 5 minutes daily makes a difference
- Use the Flash Visualization drills from the Mental Bridge Pack
- Do not force mental calculation if your child is not ready — physical abacus is still valuable
- Celebrate speed improvements: keep a record of timed challenge scores
- Consider the Abacus Mastery Bundle for comprehensive practice material
What to Expect
- Week 1-3: Multi-digit operations become fluent on physical abacus.
- Week 4-6: Mental bridge work begins. Some children take to it quickly, others need more time.
- Week 7-8: Speed challenges and confidence building. Not all children will be at the same level.
- By course end: Physical abacus should be fast and accurate. Mental ability varies and that is normal.
Parent Handout: Vedic Maths
Vedic Maths — Information for Parents
What Your Child Will Learn
- Ancient Indian mathematical shortcuts for fast calculation
- Nikhilam method for multiplication near a base (10, 100)
- Ekadhikena method for squaring numbers ending in 5
- Urdhva Tiryak (crosswise) multiplication
- Digit sum checking for verifying answers
How You Can Support at Home
- Ensure your child knows times tables up to 10 — Vedic Maths builds on this foundation
- Practice the specific methods 2-3 times per week for retention
- Encourage your child to explain methods to you — teaching deepens understanding
- These methods are meant to be fun and feel like 'maths tricks' — keep that energy
- Use digit sums as a game: 'Can you check if this answer is correct?'
What to Expect
- Week 1-2: Digit sums and Nikhilam. Students usually love the 'magic' feeling.
- Week 3-4: Ekadhikena and squaring shortcuts. Quick wins build confidence.
- Week 5-6: Urdhva Tiryak — this is the most complex method and takes practice.
- By course end: Your child should have 3-4 reliable fast calculation methods they can use independently.
