Lesson Breakdown
- Understand what Vedic Maths is and where it comes from
- Know the meaning of 'sutra' (a compact mathematical rule)
- Experience one simple mental calculation to feel the power
- Apply 'All from 9, last from 10' to subtract from 1000
- Apply the same rule to 100 and 10000
- Explain why the rule works using place value
- Multiply any 2-digit number by 11 using split-and-sum
- Handle carry when the middle sum exceeds 9
- Explain why the pattern works (11 = 10 + 1)
- Square any number ending in 5 in two steps
- Apply: n × (n+1), then append 25
- Verify using long multiplication
- Find the deficiency of each number from 10
- Apply cross-subtraction and multiply deficiencies
- Solve: 9×8, 7×9, 8×8 mentally
- Apply Nikhilam base-100 method to numbers below 100
- Apply it to numbers above 100 (excesses)
- Handle two-digit unit products correctly
- Calculate the digital root of any number
- Use digit sums to verify addition and multiplication
- Understand that a match makes an error less likely (not impossible)
- Apply doubling and halving to simplify multiplication
- Know when it helps and when it does not
- Solve: 15×16, 25×12, 50×18 mentally
- Divide any number by 5 using 'double and divide by 10'
- Divide by 25 using 'multiply by 4 and divide by 100'
- Use the digit sum pattern for dividing by 9
- Select the right Vedic technique for each problem type
- Solve a mixed problem set using mental calculation only
- Recognise personal areas for further practice
Parent tip
The best way to start is a “wow moment” — show your child a calculation they cannot yet do (e.g., 98 × 97), then show them the Vedic shortcut. Curiosity is the most powerful learning motivator. End the course by asking your child to demonstrate their favourite technique to a family member.
