Rules review

Say these out loud before starting: 5-complement of 3 is ___. 10-complement of 7 is ___. 10-complement of 4 is ___. (Answers: 2, 3, 6.) If you can answer instantly, you are ready to build speed.

You know all four rules. You can apply them correctly. Now comes the next stage: making the rules so automatic that you stop thinking about which one to use and just calculate. This is called fluency — and it is built through repetition.

What is fluency in maths?

Fluency means you can calculate quickly and accurately without using up mental energy on the procedure. Just like reading: beginners sound out every letter. Fluent readers just see the word. In maths: beginners think 'which rule? what complement?'. Fluent calculators just get the answer.

  • Stage 1: Know the rule (understand it)
  • Stage 2: Apply the rule (slowly and carefully)
  • Stage 3: Apply the rule (faster, checking less)
  • Stage 4: Fluency (automatic — like breathing)

How to use the speed drill

The drill shows one problem at a time. Type your answer and press Enter. Your time and accuracy are recorded. Each attempt is a personal challenge — try to beat your previous score. Do not rush so fast that you make errors — accuracy matters more than speed at this stage.

What to do when you get one wrong

When the drill shows a wrong answer, it shows you the rule hint. Read it. Say it aloud. Then do the next problem. Don't dwell on mistakes during the drill — review them after. The goal is to build a positive momentum of mostly-correct answers.

Daily practice is the key

15 minutes of daily drill is far more effective than 2 hours once a week. The brain consolidates patterns during sleep. Practice today, sleep tonight, the pattern deepens. Come back tomorrow and you will notice you are slightly faster.

Before you start the drill, set a goal: 'I want to get at least 8 out of 10 correct.' Then try. If you reach it, raise the bar next time. If you don't, identify which rule trips you up and review that lesson before retrying.
