வேத கணிதம் என்றால் என்ன?
What is Vedic Maths?
Vedic Maths is a collection of ancient Indian mathematical techniques that make calculation faster and more elegant. Discover the story behind these sutras and why they still matter today.
Let's Learn
What you will learn today
Understand what Vedic Maths is, where it comes from, and why it makes calculation faster.
Have you ever watched someone multiply 95 × 97 in their head in 3 seconds? Or subtract 1000 − 647 without writing anything down? That is Vedic Maths — a collection of ancient Indian mathematical patterns that make calculation fast, elegant, and even fun.
வேத கணிதம் — பண்டைய இந்தியாவின் கணித மந்திரம்.
The history in two sentences
Vedic Maths was compiled from ancient Indian texts called the Vedas. In the 20th century, Bharati Krishna Tirthaji organised 16 core rules called sutras — each a short phrase describing a powerful mathematical pattern. These techniques were used by Indian scholars for thousands of years.
What is a sutra?
A sutra is a short, memorable phrase that encodes a mathematical rule. For example: 'All from 9 and the last from 10' — this one sentence tells you how to subtract from any power of ten. Once you understand what the sutra means, you can apply it to thousands of different problems.
- 'All from 9, last from 10' → quick subtraction from 1000, 10000...
- 'By one more than the one before' → squaring numbers ending in 5
- 'Vertically and crosswise' → multiplication of any size numbers
Vedic Maths is not magic — it is pattern recognition
These techniques work because numbers have deep patterns that most schools never teach. Vedic Maths trains you to see and use these patterns. The more you practise, the more patterns you notice — and the faster you calculate.

📐 A taste of the power
Before going further, try this: 35 × 35. Using Vedic Maths: take the first digit (3), multiply by the next number (4): 3 × 4 = 12. Then write 25 after it: 1225. Done! 35 × 35 = 1225. We will fully learn this technique in Lesson 4.
How to learn Vedic Maths
Unlike memorising multiplication tables, Vedic Maths requires understanding why each rule works. When you understand the why, you never forget the how. This course teaches every technique with full explanation — not just the shortcut, but the reason it works.
Challenge Round
Think about it
What is the fastest way you currently know to calculate 1000 − 372? Write it down (even mentally). In the next lesson, you will learn a way to do it in 3 seconds without writing anything.
Vedic Maths is a system of mathematical patterns and shortcuts from ancient India. It works by exploiting the natural structure of numbers. Understanding the WHY is as important as learning the HOW.
