Abacus L1 Support Pack — Complete Parent Guide
This guide covers what to say, what to watch for, common errors, and when to move on for each exercise type in the L1 Support Pack. Keep this page handy during every practice session.
Bead Position Drills
What to say
- “Look at the beads touching the bar. The filled circle means the bead is active.”
- “The upper bead is worth 5. Each lower bead is worth 1. Add them together.”
- “Try not to count one by one — see the pattern as a whole number.”
Common errors to watch for
- Forgetting that the upper bead = 5 (writing 1 instead of 5)
- Counting inactive beads instead of active ones
- Confusing 0 (all beads away from bar) with not answering
Number Building Exercises
What to say
- “First, tell me: how many tens? How many ones?”
- “Now set the tens rod first, then the ones rod.”
- “For the ones rod, do you need the upper bead? Only if ones is 5 or more.”
Common errors to watch for
- Putting 10 on the ones rod (using all beads) instead of 1 on the tens rod
- Mixing up which rod is tens and which is ones
- For 20: forgetting that 2 on the tens rod means pushing 2 lower beads up
Simple Addition Practice
What to say
- “First, show me the first number on the abacus.”
- “Now, can you push more beads up to add? Or is the rod full?”
- “If the rod is full, remember the swap: push the upper bead down and take away the extra lower beads.”
Common errors to watch for
- Trying to push a 5th lower bead up (the rod only has 4)
- Forgetting to remove lower beads after pushing the upper bead down
- Removing the wrong number of lower beads during the swap
When to Repeat vs. Move On
Repeat the exercise if...
- Score is below 7/10 on any page
- Child counts beads one-by-one instead of recognising patterns
- Same error happens 3+ times (e.g., always forgetting upper bead = 5)
- Child asks for help on more than half the problems
Move on to next exercise if...
- Score is 8/10 or higher on the last page
- Child answers within 5 seconds per problem
- Child can explain their reasoning without prompting
- Child is bored and wants more challenge
