Mental Bridge — Mental Addition Sequences
40 problems across 4 pages. The child holds a number in their mental abacus image, adds another number mentally, and writes the result. NO physical abacus allowed.
NO physical abacus for this drill.
The child must visualise the bead positions in their mind. If they cannot picture the beads, go back to Flash Visualization drills first.
Page 1 of 4 — Single-Digit + Single-Digit
Parent instruction
Say: “Picture {number} on your mental abacus. Now add {number}. What do you see?” Give them 5-10 seconds to visualise before they write.
Page 2 of 4 — Using Complement Rules Mentally
Parent instruction
These problems require 5-complement rules. The child must visualise the upper bead swap in their mind. If they hesitate more than 15 seconds, note it and move on.
Page 3 of 4 — Two-Digit Mental Addition
Parent instruction
The child must picture a two-rod abacus. Say: “Picture the tens rod and the ones rod. Place {number}, now add {number}to the ones rod. What is the result?”
Page 4 of 4 — Addition Chains
Parent instruction
Read each number one at a time with a 2-second pause. The child updates their mental image with each addition. They write only the final answer.
