மூன்று இலக்க வேக பயிற்சி
Three-Digit Speed Building
~14 min
Rules are in your head — now drive them into your reflexes. Timed drills, three-digit flash numbers, and personal best tracking make this the most exhilarating lesson in Level 3.
By the end of this lesson you will be able to— இந்த பாடத்தின் இறுதியில்
- Apply all Level 3 rules at increasing speed
- Complete the timed drill with personal best tracking
- Recall three-digit numbers from a flash display
Let's Learn
What you will learn today
Build calculation speed with 3-digit problems through focused drill practice.
The 4 rules, instant recall
Say out loud: (1) Direct — push/pull beads. (2) 5-rule — upper bead, complement beads on same rod. (3) Carry — +1 to next rod left, −complement from current. (4) Borrow — −1 from rod left, +complement to current. These are your tools. Speed means making them automatic.
You know all four rules. You can apply them correctly. The next stage is building speed. Fast three-digit calculation is not about rushing — it is about recognising the rule so quickly that there is no pause between seeing the problem and knowing the first move.
Three stages of fluency
Stage 1 — Slow and correct: think about each rule before applying it. Stage 2 — Faster and accurate: recognise the rule without thinking, apply it confidently. Stage 3 — Automatic: the rule choice and execution happen together, like reading a word.
- Stage 1: every Level 3 learner starts here
- Stage 2: this is the target for the speed drill
- Stage 3: this comes with weeks of daily practice
Speed drill tips
Accuracy is more important than speed at this stage. Set a goal of 70%+ correct before trying to go faster. Read the problem, instantly classify it (which rule?), apply the rule, type the answer. Don't overthink each digit — let the rule guide you.
Personal best tracking
The drill below tracks your personal best score (correct answers + time). Each time you beat your best, you have made a measurable improvement. Even tiny improvements are real improvements. Aim to beat your previous score each session.
Daily practice beats long sessions
15 minutes of three-digit drill every day builds fluency faster than a 2-hour session once a week. The brain needs repetition across multiple days to consolidate patterns. Practice today — sleep — practice tomorrow. Each session reinforces the last.
Challenge Round
Before you drill — warm-up calculation
Solve this mentally: 148 + 5 = ? Which rule applies? What is the answer?
Speed comes from knowing the rules so well that choosing them takes no effort. Drill regularly. Accept your current speed — then work to beat it. Three-digit fluency is a real and impressive skill.
