Two rods — twice the picture
You can already read one rod instantly. Now we read two rods at once — the tens rod and the ones rod together. The result is a two-digit number as a single image.
How to read two rods
Look at the tens rod → get the tens digit. Look at the ones rod → get the ones digit. Combine. With practice, you see both at once as a single picture rather than two separate looks.

Tens rod for 4: four earth beads up, no heaven. Ones rod for 7: heaven down + two earth beads up. Read together: 47.

Try not to read left-then-right consciously. After enough practice, the two-rod image becomes a single whole pattern — like recognising a face rather than examining each feature.
