Let's Learn

What you will learn today

Tell the difference between needs and wants, and use this skill before every spending decision.

The most important money skill

If you could learn only ONE money skill for your entire life, it should be this: the ability to tell the difference between what you NEED and what you WANT. Every smart money decision starts here. Every budget starts here. Every saving plan starts here. Let's learn it properly.

What is a need?

A need is something you must have to live safely and healthily. Without it, you would be in danger, sick, or unable to function. Food, clean water, shelter, basic clothing, and education are needs. You do not choose whether to have them — you must have them.

  • Food — you need to eat to live
  • Water — you need clean water every day
  • Shelter — you need a safe place to sleep
  • Clothing — you need basic clothes for warmth and protection
  • Education — you need to learn to build your future

What is a want?

A want is something you would like to have, but you can live without. Toys, sweets, video games, brand-name shoes, the latest phone — these are wants. Wants are not bad. They make life fun. But they should come AFTER needs and savings are covered.

📐 The same thing can be both

Here is the tricky part: the same item can be a need OR a want depending on the situation. One pair of school shoes? Need. A fifth pair of fancy shoes? Want. A glass of water when you are thirsty? Need. A bottle of flavoured soda? Want. Rice for dinner? Need. A ₹200 pizza? Want. Context matters.

  1. 1School shoes → Need. Fifth pair of fancy shoes → Want.
  2. 2Water when thirsty → Need. Flavoured soda → Want.
  3. 3Rice for dinner → Need. ₹200 pizza → Want.

💡

The needs-vs-wants test

Before spending any money, ask yourself these three questions: (1) Can I live without this? If yes, it is a want. (2) Will I still want this next week? If no, it is an impulse. (3) Have I covered my needs and savings first? If no, the want can wait. This 3-question test prevents most bad spending decisions.

🔍

Common trap: 'But everyone has one!'

When your friends have a new toy or gadget, it feels like you NEED one too. But that is peer pressure, not a real need. A need is about survival and health. 'Everyone has one' is a feeling, not a fact. It is okay to want what friends have — just recognise it as a want, not a need.

✏️

Sort these items

For each item, decide: need or want? (1) School uniform. (2) Ice cream. (3) Drinking water. (4) A new video game. (5) Textbooks for class. (6) A toy robot.

Challenge Round

Your own needs-vs-wants list

Walk around your house and pick 10 items. Write two columns: 'Needs' and 'Wants'. Sort all 10 items. If any item could be either, explain why. Show your list to a parent or sibling and see if they agree.

🌟

Needs are essential for life and health. Wants make life fun but are not essential. The 3-question test helps you decide before every spending choice. Needs first, savings second, wants last.

Next: how do people actually earn money? Understanding earning changes how you think about spending.
