Let's Learn

What you will learn today

Plan saving goals of ₹1,000+ with realistic timelines and milestone tracking.

Beyond the piggy bank

In the Kids course, saving meant putting coins in a jar. That's great for ₹100 goals. But teen goals are bigger: a ₹3,000 phone case, a ₹5,000 gadget, a ₹10,000 bicycle. These need real planning.

Every big goal needs three numbers

Before you start saving, you need to know exactly:

  • 1. WHAT: The exact thing and its price (₹3,000 headphones)
  • 2. HOW MUCH per week: Your weekly saving amount (₹100/week)
  • 3. HOW LONG: Total weeks needed (₹3,000 ÷ ₹100 = 30 weeks)

📐 Ravi's bicycle fund

Ravi wants a bicycle for ₹8,000. He can save ₹200/week from allowance and small tasks:

  1. 1Goal: ₹8,000 bicycle
  2. 2Weekly saving: ₹200
  3. 3Weeks needed: ₹8,000 ÷ ₹200 = 40 weeks (~10 months)
  4. 425% milestone (₹2,000): Week 10 — small celebration
  5. 550% milestone (₹4,000): Week 20 — halfway there!
  6. 675% milestone (₹6,000): Week 30 — almost done
  7. 7100% (₹8,000): Week 40 — bicycle earned through discipline

💡

Milestone rewards keep you going

Set celebration points at 25%, 50%, and 75% of your goal. Celebrate each milestone — but NOT by spending your savings! A milestone reward can be free: telling a friend your progress, updating your tracker, or treating yourself to something small you already budgeted for.

⚠️

The 'just this once' trap

The moment you dip into savings 'just this once', it becomes a habit. Treat your savings as money that doesn't exist for spending. It's already committed to your goal.

Speed up your saving

Want to reach your goal faster? You have two options:

  • 1. Save more per week: ₹200 → ₹300 means 40 weeks → 27 weeks
  • 2. Reduce wants spending: Skip two ₹50 snacks/week = ₹100 extra savings
  • Both work. Choose what's realistic for you.

✏️

Your turn — plan a real goal

Pick something you actually want that costs ₹1,000 or more. Calculate: weekly saving amount and number of weeks. Set your 25%, 50%, and 75% milestones.

Big goals need real plans

Every teen saving goal needs three numbers: what, how much per week, how many weeks. Milestones keep you motivated. Never dip into savings 'just this once'. Consistent small amounts beat sporadic large ones.

🌟

Three numbers for every goal: total cost, weekly saving, and weeks needed. Milestones at 25/50/75% keep you motivated. Never dip 'just this once'. Consistency wins.

Next: building a real teen budget — the 50-30-20 system for managing ₹500 to ₹5,000.

Key Points

  • Teen goals are bigger: a ₹3,000 phone case, a ₹5,000 gadget, a ₹10,000 bicycle — these need real planning, not just a piggy bank
  • Every big goal needs three numbers: total amount, weekly saving rate, and number of weeks
  • Example: ₹3,000 goal ÷ ₹100/week = 30 weeks. If you save ₹150/week, it takes only 20 weeks.
  • Milestone rewards keep you going: at 25%, 50%, 75% — celebrate small (not by spending your savings!)
  • Tamil comparison: 'சிறு துளி பெரு வெள்ளம்' (small drops make a flood) — consistent small saving beats irregular large amounts
