Let's Learn

What you will learn today

Learn how UPI, debit cards, and online payments work — and the safety rules that protect your money.

Money without cash

You've probably seen your parents tap a phone to pay at a shop. That's UPI — Unified Payments Interface. It moves real money from one bank account to another instantly. Understanding how it works is the first step to using it safely.

How UPI actually works

When you send ₹100 via Google Pay or PhonePe:

  • 1. You enter the receiver's UPI ID or scan their QR code
  • 2. You confirm the amount and enter your UPI PIN
  • 3. The money leaves YOUR bank account instantly
  • 4. It arrives in THEIR bank account within seconds
  • 5. Once sent, it is gone — there is no 'undo' button

Debit card vs credit card

These two cards look similar but work very differently:

  • Debit card = YOUR money. When you swipe, money comes from your bank account. Spend only what you have.
  • Credit card = BORROWED money. When you swipe, the bank pays the shop. You must pay the bank back later — with interest if late.
  • At your age: debit is what matters. Credit cards come later — and they require careful handling.

5 digital payment safety rules

Memorise these. They protect every rupee you send digitally:

📐 Ravi's close call

Ravi got a message: 'Your GPay account will be blocked. Click this link to verify.' He almost clicked — but remembered rule #3. He asked his father, who confirmed it was a scam. No bank ever sends such messages.

💡

The golden rule of digital money

Treat digital money exactly like cash. If you wouldn't hand ₹500 in notes to a stranger on the street, don't send ₹500 to an unknown UPI ID or click a random payment link.

✏️

Test yourself — would you send?

A friend messages: 'Send me ₹300 to this number for the cricket bat share.' What do you check before sending? List 3 things.

Digital money = real money

UPI sends real money instantly with no undo. Debit card is your money; credit card is borrowed money. The 5 safety rules protect you. Never share PIN/OTP. Always verify before sending.

Digital payments are fast and convenient but have no undo button. The 5 safety rules — PIN privacy, name verification, link caution, history checking, and official-app-only — protect every transaction.

Key Points

  • UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm) moves money directly from your bank account — it's real money, not game coins
  • Debit card = your money in your account. Credit card = borrowed money you must pay back with interest
  • Never share your PIN, OTP, or UPI MPIN with anyone — not even friends or people claiming to be from the bank
  • Always verify the receiver's name before confirming any payment — once sent, money is very hard to get back
  • Tamil comparison: காசு கொடுப்பது vs டிஜிட்டல் பணம் — the risk is the same, but mistakes happen faster online
