5 warning signs of a money scam
If you see ANY of these, it's almost certainly a scam:
- 1. GUARANTEED high returns: 'Earn ₹10,000 in one week — guaranteed!'
- 2. URGENCY: 'Act now! Only 2 spots left! Offer ends in 1 hour!'
- 3. SECRECY: 'Don't tell your parents — this is for smart teens only'
- 4. PAY FIRST: 'Pay ₹500 registration fee to start earning ₹5,000/month'
- 5. TOO GOOD: If it sounds too good to be true, it IS too good to be true
Common scams targeting teens
These are real scams that teens fall for every day:
- Fake Instagram giveaways: 'Follow + share + pay ₹99 shipping to win an iPhone'
- 'Earn from home' schemes: 'Make ₹5,000/day just by clicking links' — you'll never get paid
- Crypto/forex 'tips': 'Join my group for free trading signals' — they take your money
- Paid survey sites: 'Complete surveys for ₹200 each' — minimum payout is always unreachable
- 'Double your money' WhatsApp groups: 'Send ₹1,000 and get ₹2,000 back' — you lose everything
No one can double your money quickly
This is the most important rule in money safety: NO legitimate way to quickly double or triple money exists. Anyone promising this — friend, stranger, or online 'mentor' — is trying to take your money, not grow it.
What to do when you spot a scam
Don't engage. Don't respond. Don't click links. Don't send money. Tell a parent or trusted adult. Block the sender. If money was already sent, tell a parent immediately — they can contact the bank.
📐 Priya almost got scammed
Priya saw an Instagram post: 'Earn ₹3,000/week testing apps — just pay ₹299 to register.' It had 500 likes and positive comments. She checked: warning sign #4 (pay first to earn). She didn't pay. Her friend did — and lost ₹299 with no app-testing work.
Spot the scam
You get a WhatsApp message: 'Join our investment group — we turned ₹500 into ₹50,000 in one month! Limited spots — send ₹500 to this UPI ID to join.' How many warning signs can you spot?
If it sounds too good to be true...
...it IS. Five warning signs: guaranteed returns, urgency, secrecy, pay-first, too-good-to-be-true. No one can double your money quickly. When in doubt: don't engage, tell a trusted adult.
Five warning signs: guaranteed returns, urgency, secrecy, pay-first, too-good-to-be-true. No legitimate way to quickly double money exists. Don't engage — tell a trusted adult.
