What you will learn today
Build a working budget for ₹500–₹5,000 using the 50-30-20 approach.
A real budget for real teen life
In the Kids course, budgeting meant splitting ₹200 into needs, savings, and wants. That's the right idea — but now your numbers are bigger and your spending is more complex. Time for a real system.
The 50-30-20 rule for teens
A simple, proven split that works for any amount:
- 50% for NEEDS: school supplies, transport, phone recharge, essential food
- 20% for SAVINGS: toward your current saving goal
- 30% for WANTS: snacks, entertainment, outings, fun stuff
📐 Meera's monthly budget: ₹2,000
Meera gets ₹2,000/month (₹1,500 allowance + ₹500 festival gift averaged):
- 150% Needs = ₹1,000 → School supplies (₹300), bus pass (₹400), phone recharge (₹200), emergency (₹100)
- 220% Savings = ₹400 → Toward ₹4,000 tablet goal (10 months at this rate)
- 330% Wants = ₹600 → Snacks (₹200), movies/games (₹200), treats with friends (₹200)
- 4Total: ₹1,000 + ₹400 + ₹600 = ₹2,000 ✓
Track where it actually goes
Track your spending for one week. Write down every rupee. Most teens are shocked by how much goes to small daily purchases — ₹30 snacks add up to ₹900/month.
The percentages are guidelines, not chains
If your needs are lower (no transport cost, parents buy supplies), shift the extra to savings. If needs are higher one month (school trip), adjust wants down. Flexibility is fine — the habit of dividing BEFORE spending is what matters.
All income counts
Your budget should include ALL money that comes in — not just regular allowance:
- Regular allowance (weekly or monthly)
- Festival and birthday money (average it over 12 months)
- Money for small tasks or tutoring
- Gifts from relatives
- Any other income — all of it goes through your budget, not around it
Your turn — build your budget
Estimate your total monthly income (all sources). Apply the 50-30-20 split. Does it feel realistic? Adjust if needed.
Divide before you spend
50% needs, 20% savings, 30% wants. Track spending to find hidden costs. All income counts. Adjust percentages when life changes. The habit of dividing before spending is the real skill.
The 50-30-20 rule: 50% needs, 20% savings, 30% wants. Track everything. Include all income sources. Adjust when needed. The habit matters more than the exact percentages.
