Let's Learn

What you will learn today

Understand how bank accounts work, what interest means, and how to open your first savings account.

Your money's safe house

So far in this course, you've learned to earn, save, budget, and protect money. But where does saved money actually GO? For any amount over ₹500, the answer should be: a bank account.

How a savings account works

A savings account is simple:

  • You DEPOSIT money (put it in) whenever you want
  • You WITHDRAW money (take it out) when you need it
  • Your BALANCE is how much is currently in the account
  • The bank keeps it SAFE — insured up to ₹5,00,000 by the government
  • You get a passbook or app showing every transaction

What is interest?

Interest is money the bank pays YOU for keeping your money with them. Think of it as rent — you let the bank use your money, and they pay you for it.

  • Current rate: about 3–4% per year for savings accounts
  • ₹10,000 at 4% = about ₹400 interest in one year
  • ₹1,000 at 4% = about ₹40 in one year — small, but free money
  • Interest adds up over time — the longer you save, the more you earn

💡

Bank account vs piggy bank

A piggy bank keeps money at home. A bank account keeps money safe, insured, AND earning interest. For any savings goal over ₹500, a bank account is better.

Opening a minor's savings account

You don't have to wait until 18. Most Indian banks offer minor's savings accounts for children 10+:

  • You need: a parent or guardian to co-sign
  • Documents: Aadhaar card (yours + parent's), passport-size photos
  • First deposit: usually ₹500 or ₹1,000 depending on the bank
  • You get: a passbook, and usually a debit card (limited use)
  • When you turn 18: the account converts to a regular adult account

📐 How ₹200/month grows in a bank

If you deposit ₹200 every month into a savings account at 4% interest:

  1. 1After 1 year: ₹2,400 saved + about ₹50 interest = ₹2,450
  2. 2After 2 years: ₹4,800 saved + about ₹200 interest = ₹5,000
  3. 3After 3 years: ₹7,200 saved + about ₹450 interest = ₹7,650
  4. 4The interest is small — but it's completely free money for doing nothing extra

✏️

Calculate your bank interest

If you deposit ₹5,000 at 4% interest, how much interest do you earn in one year? (Hint: ₹5,000 × 0.04 = ?)

Banks make your money safer AND bigger

A savings account is safe (government insured), accessible (withdraw when needed), and growing (earns interest). You can open one at any age with a parent. For teen savings, a bank beats a piggy bank every time.

🌟

Banks keep money safe, insured, and growing through interest. You can open a minor's account at 10+ with a parent. Interest is small but free. For any saving over ₹500, a bank beats a piggy bank.

Final lesson: build your complete Teen Money Plan — combining everything from this course.

Key Points
