Quick recall

What two things should you check in the URL bar? (https:// and padlock icon.) Good. Now let us talk about the place where most children spend the most time online: social media.

What is social media?

Social media includes apps and websites where you create a profile and share content: Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Facebook, X (Twitter), and others. Some are for messaging, some for sharing photos, some for videos. All of them involve other people seeing what you post — and some of those people may be strangers.

Three privacy settings everyone needs

Setting 1: Make your profile PRIVATE — only approved people can see your posts. Setting 2: Turn OFF location sharing — no one needs to know exactly where you are. Setting 3: Disable 'message requests from strangers' or set messages to 'friends only'. These three settings prevent most social media safety problems.

  • 1. Profile → Private (approved followers only)
  • 2. Location sharing → OFF
  • 3. Messages → Friends only (no strangers)

💡

The teacher test

Before posting anything, ask yourself: 'Would my teacher or parent be okay seeing this?' If the answer is 'no' or 'maybe not', do not post it. This simple test prevents most social media regrets. Remember: screenshots are forever — even deleted posts can be saved by someone else.

⚠️

Stranger danger online

Never accept friend or follow requests from people you do not know in real life. Scammers and unsafe people create fake profiles with attractive photos. They may say they are your age. They may say they go to a nearby school. If you have never met someone face-to-face, they are a stranger — no matter how friendly they seem online.

✏️

Privacy settings check

If you have a social media account, check right now (with a parent): Is your profile private? Is location sharing off? Can strangers send you messages? If you do not have an account yet, discuss with a parent: what settings would you set up first?

What you learned

Set your profile to private, turn off location sharing, and block messages from strangers. Use the teacher test before posting. Never accept requests from people you have not met in real life. Screenshots are forever — deleted posts can still be saved by others.

🌟

Your social media is now safer. Three settings: private profile, location off, messages from friends only. Teacher test before every post.

Next: what cyberbullying is and exactly what to do about it.
