Let's Learn

🔁

Quick recall

What is the golden rule of internet safety? (Answer: when in doubt, do not click — ask a trusted adult.) Good. Now let us learn what exactly we need to protect online.

What is personal information?

Personal information is any detail that identifies YOU specifically. It includes: your full name, home address, phone number, school name, birthday, photos of yourself, email address, and your parents' names. Some of this is fine to share with people you trust. None of it should be shared with strangers online.

  • Full name — identifies you specifically
  • Home address — reveals where you live
  • Phone number — allows direct contact
  • School name + class — narrows your location
  • Birthday — used for identity theft and fake accounts
  • Photos — show what you look like

Safe vs unsafe to share

Some things are usually safe: your first name only, your age (not birthday), your city (not address), your hobbies. Things that are NEVER safe to share with strangers online: full name + location, home address, phone number, school name and section, passwords, family photos with location tags.

📐 A real scenario

Ravi plays an online game. A friendly player asks: 'Which school do you go to?' Ravi thinks: 'They are just being friendly.' But a stranger now knows Ravi's school. Later they ask: 'What time does school finish?' Now a stranger knows where Ravi is and when. Each small piece of information adds up. The safe answer: 'I do not share that online.'

🔍

Common trap: 'It is just a game'

Many children think: 'It is just a game, so sharing details does not matter.' But scammers and unsafe people specifically use games and social platforms to talk to children. The same rules apply everywhere online — games, chat, social media, school forums.

✏️

Your turn

A stranger online asks you: 'What is your full name and which class are you in?' What do you say? Think about this before looking at the hint.

Challenge Round

The information audit

Check one of your online profiles (gaming, social media, school) with a parent. Does it show your full name? School? Birthday? Location? Any of these visible to strangers? Remove or hide anything that a stranger should not see.

What you learned

Personal information identifies you specifically — name, address, phone, school, birthday, photos. Your first name and age are usually safe. Full details should never be shared with strangers online. Every small piece of information adds up. The safe response to strangers: 'I do not share that online.'

🌟

You can now identify personal information and know what to protect. The rule: never share details that could help a stranger find you.

Next: how to create strong passwords that keep your accounts safe.
