Let's Learn
What you will learn today
Learn to greet people and introduce yourself confidently in English.
Why greetings matter
When you meet someone new, the first thing you say is a greeting. In English, greetings change depending on the time of day. Learning the right greeting makes a strong first impression.
Time-based greetings
English has different greetings for different times of day. Use 'Good morning' from sunrise until noon. Use 'Good afternoon' from noon until about 5 PM. Use 'Good evening' after 5 PM. 'Hello' and 'Hi' work at any time.
- Good morning — sunrise to 12 noon
- Good afternoon — 12 noon to 5 PM
- Good evening — after 5 PM
- Hello / Hi — works any time
'Good morning' = காலை வணக்கம், 'Good afternoon' = மதிய வணக்கம், 'Good evening' = மாலை வணக்கம்
'Good night' is NOT a greeting!
'Good night' is only used when saying goodbye or going to sleep. Never use 'Good night' when you meet someone — use 'Good evening' instead. This is different from Tamil, where 'இரவு வணக்கம்' could be used as a greeting.
Introducing yourself
To introduce yourself, use one of these patterns: 'My name is ___' or 'I am ___'. To share your age: 'I am ___ years old'. To ask someone's name: 'What is your name?'
- My name is Priya.
- I am Priya.
- I am 8 years old.
- What is your name?
உங்களை அறிமுகப்படுத்த: 'My name is ___' அல்லது 'I am ___'. வயதைச் சொல்ல: 'I am ___ years old'.
📐 A complete introduction
Imagine you meet a new classmate in the morning. Here is what you might say: 'Good morning! My name is Arjun. I am 9 years old. What is your name?' — That is four sentences, and you have made a confident first impression.
உதாரணம்: 'Good morning! My name is Arjun. I am 9 years old. What is your name?' — நான்கு வாக்கியங்கள், ஒரு நல்ல முதல் தோற்றம்.
Your turn
Practise saying this aloud: 'Good afternoon! My name is ___. I am ___ years old. What is your name?' Fill in your own name and age.
Challenge Round
Challenge: Greeting at different times
It is 7 AM and you meet your teacher. What greeting do you use? It is 6 PM and you meet your neighbour. What greeting do you use? It is bedtime and you are saying goodbye to your parents. What do you say?
What you learned
You can now greet people at any time of day and introduce yourself in English. You know that 'Good night' is a farewell, not a greeting. You can ask someone their name and tell them yours. These four skills — greeting, introducing, asking, and responding — are the foundation of every English conversation.
You now have the first building block of English confidence: you can greet anyone and introduce yourself clearly.
↪ Next lesson: talking about your family and the people around you.
