Question words
English has six main question words: What (என்ன), Where (எங்கே), Who (யார்), When (எப்போது), How (எப்படி), Why (ஏன்). The question word always comes FIRST in English.
- What = என்ன (asks about things)
- Where = எங்கே (asks about place)
- Who = யார் (asks about people)
- When = எப்போது (asks about time)
- How = எப்படி (asks about method)
- Why = ஏன் (asks about reason)
ஆறு முக்கிய கேள்வி சொற்கள்: What (என்ன), Where (எங்கே), Who (யார்), When (எப்போது), How (எப்படி), Why (ஏன்). கேள்வி சொல் எப்போதும் முதலில் வரும்.
Question word order
In English questions, the word order changes from statements. Statement: 'He is happy.' Question: 'Is he happy?' With question words: 'What is your name?' not 'Your name what is?' The question word comes first, then the verb, then the subject.
தமிழ்: 'உன் பெயர் என்ன?' (question word at end). English: 'What is your name?' (question word at start).
📐 Common questions
Here are questions you will use every day: 'What is this?' 'Where is the school?' 'Who is she?' 'When is the exam?' 'How are you?' 'Why are you late?'
- 1What is this? — This is a pen.
- 2Where is the school? — It is on Main Road.
- 3Who is she? — She is my teacher.
- 4How are you? — I am fine, thank you.
அன்றாடக் கேள்விகள்: 'What is this?' 'Where is the school?' 'Who is she?' 'How are you?' — கேள்வி சொல் முதலில் வரும்.
Tamil word order in questions
Tamil speakers often use Tamil question order: 'Your name what is?' This is because Tamil puts the question word at the end. In English, the question word ALWAYS comes first: 'What is your name?'
Your turn
Form 3 questions using 3 different question words. Try What, Where, and Who. Answer each question yourself.
What you learned
Question words come first in English. The verb comes before the subject in questions. This is the opposite of Tamil question structure. With practice, English question order will become automatic.
கேள்வி சொற்கள் ஆங்கிலத்தில் முதலில் வரும் (தமிழுக்கு எதிர்). பயிற்சியுடன் இது இயல்பாக மாறும்.
You can now ask questions using What, Where, Who, When, How, and Why — the key to every English conversation.
↪ Next: days, months, and numbers — the everyday vocabulary that fills your conversations.
