Let's Learn
What you will learn today
Describe your family members and the people around you using simple English sentences.
Quick recall
Before we start: introduce yourself in English. Say your name and age. Did you use 'My name is...' and 'I am... years old'? Good — let us build on that.
Family words in English
Here are the most important family words: Mother (அம்மா), Father (அப்பா), Brother (சகோதரன்), Sister (சகோதரி), Grandmother (பாட்டி), Grandfather (தாத்தா). To introduce a family member: 'This is my mother. Her name is Lakshmi.'
- Mother / அம்மா
- Father / அப்பா
- Brother / சகோதரன்
- Sister / சகோதரி
- Grandmother / பாட்டி
- Grandfather / தாத்தா
குடும்ப வார்த்தைகளை ஆங்கிலத்தில் கற்றுக்கொள்வோம். ஒவ்வொரு உறவுக்கும் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட ஆங்கில வார்த்தை உள்ளது.
He, She, and They
When you talk about people, use pronouns instead of repeating their name. 'He' is for one boy or man. 'She' is for one girl or woman. 'They' is for more than one person. 'My father is a teacher. He is kind.' — 'He' replaces 'My father' in the second sentence.
'He' = அவன்/அவர் (ஆண்), 'She' = அவள்/அவர் (பெண்), 'They' = அவர்கள் (பலர்)
📐 Describing your family
Here is how to describe your family: 'This is my mother. She is a doctor. She is kind. This is my brother. He is 12 years old. He likes cricket.' Each sentence follows: This is my ___ + He/She is ___ .
ஒவ்வொரு வாக்கியமும் இந்த வடிவத்தைப் பின்பற்றுகிறது: This is my ___ + He/She is ___.
Common confusion: He vs She
Some children use 'He' for everyone because Tamil uses 'அவர்' for both genders in polite speech. In English, you MUST use 'She' for girls and women, and 'He' for boys and men. 'She is my mother' — never 'He is my mother'.
Your turn
Think of one family member. Say three sentences about them: (1) 'This is my ___.' (2) 'He/She is ___.' (3) 'He/She likes ___.'
Challenge Round
Family introduction challenge
Describe 3 family members using at least 2 sentences each. Make sure you use 'He' for males and 'She' for females correctly every time.
What you learned
You can now name family members in English, use He/She/They correctly, and describe people with simple sentences. The pattern 'This is my ___. He/She is ___.' works for introducing anyone.
Family vocabulary and pronouns are now part of your English toolkit. You can introduce and describe the people in your life.
↪ Next: naming everyday objects and learning a rule that does not exist in Tamil — articles (a, an, the).
