Everyday objects
Look around you. Everything has an English name. Here are some common ones: book (புத்தகம்), pen (பேனா), table (மேசை), chair (நாற்காலி), bag (பை), cup (கோப்பை), plate (தட்டு), clock (கடிகாரம்), door (கதவு), window (ஜன்னல்).

'A' and 'An' — one of many
In English, you cannot just say 'I have book'. You must say 'I have A book'. 'A' and 'An' mean 'one of many' — any book, not a specific one. Tamil does not have this rule, so it feels strange at first. Use 'A' before consonant sounds: a book, a pen, a table. Use 'An' before vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u): an apple, an umbrella, an egg.
தமிழில் 'a' அல்லது 'an' கிடையாது. ஆங்கிலத்தில் 'I have book' தவறு — 'I have a book' சரி.
The vowel sound rule
Remember: it is about the SOUND, not the letter. 'An hour' (the 'h' is silent, so it starts with a vowel sound). 'A university' (starts with a 'yoo' sound, which is a consonant sound). For now, just remember: a, e, i, o, u → use 'an'. Everything else → use 'a'.
'An' — a, e, i, o, u உயிர் எழுத்து ஒலியுடன் தொடங்கும் சொற்களுக்கு. 'A' — மற்ற அனைத்து ஒலிகளுக்கு.
'The' — a specific thing
'The' is used when both people know exactly which thing you mean. 'Close the door' — there is one door right here, and both people can see it. 'Give me a pen' (any pen) vs 'Give me the pen' (that specific pen I was using).
'The' = குறிப்பிட்ட ஒன்று. 'a pen' = ஏதாவது ஒரு பேனா. 'the pen' = அந்த குறிப்பிட்ட பேனா.
