Let's Learn

What you will learn today

Put everything together: read a short English passage, understand it, and answer questions about it.

The real test of English confidence

You have learned greetings, family words, objects, articles, verbs, adjectives, questions, days, and months. Now it is time to use ALL of them together. Reading a passage and understanding it is the best way to prove your English confidence.

நீங்கள் வாழ்த்துக்கள், குடும்ப வார்த்தைகள், பொருள்கள், கட்டுரைச் சொற்கள், வினைச்சொற்கள், பெயரடைகள், கேள்விகள், நாட்கள் மற்றும் மாதங்கள் ஆகியவற்றைக் கற்றுள்ளீர்கள். இப்போது எல்லாவற்றையும் ஒன்றாகப் பயன்படுத்துவோம்.

How to read a passage

Read the passage TWICE. First time: read the whole thing to get the general meaning — do not stop at every unknown word. Second time: read slowly and look for specific details. If you find a word you do not know, look at the words around it — this is called 'context clues'.

  • First read: general meaning — what is it about?
  • Second read: specific details — who, what, where, when
  • Unknown words: guess from context before looking up

பத்தியை இரண்டு முறை படியுங்கள்: முதல் முறை பொதுவான பொருளுக்கு, இரண்டாவது முறை குறிப்பிட்ட விவரங்களுக்கு.

📐 Read this passage

My name is Meera. I am 9 years old. I live in Chennai with my family. My father is a doctor. He works at a big hospital. My mother is a teacher. She teaches English at a school. I have a small brother. His name is Karthik. He is 5 years old. Every morning, I wake up at 6 o'clock. I eat breakfast and walk to school. My school is near my house. I like reading books. My favourite subject is science. On Saturdays, I play with my friends in the park. I am happy.

இதை இரண்டு முறை படியுங்கள் — முதலில் பொதுவான அர்த்தத்திற்கு, பிறகு குறிப்பிட்ட விவரங்களுக்கு.

💡

Three reading strategies

When reading any passage: (1) Scan first — look at the length and spot familiar words. (2) Read for meaning — what is the passage about overall? (3) Read for detail — find specific facts using question words: Who? What? Where? When? These three steps work for any English passage, in school or outside.

எந்த ஒரு பத்தியையும் படிக்கும் போது: (1) முதலில் கண்ணோட்டமாகப் படியுங்கள் (2) பொருளுக்காகப் படியுங்கள் (3) விவரங்களுக்காகப் படியுங்கள் — யார்? என்ன? எங்கே? எப்போது?

What did you notice?

This passage uses everything you learned: greetings-style introduction ('My name is Meera'), family words (father, mother, brother), pronouns (He, She, His), articles (a doctor, a big hospital, a school), verbs (works, teaches, wake up, eat, walk, play), adjectives (big, small, favourite), time words (6 o'clock, Saturdays, morning).

  • Introduction: My name is Meera. I am 9.
  • Family: father (doctor), mother (teacher), brother (Karthik, age 5)
  • Daily routine: wake up at 6, eat breakfast, walk to school
  • Interests: reading books, favourite subject = science
  • Weekend: plays in the park on Saturdays

இந்தப் பத்தி நீங்கள் கற்ற அனைத்தையும் பயன்படுத்துகிறது: வாழ்த்துக்கள், குடும்பம், பொருட்கள், வினைச்சொற்கள், பெயரடைகள், கேள்விகள், நேரம்.

⚠️

Common reading mistake

Do not stop at every unknown word and try to translate it to Tamil in your head. This breaks your reading flow. Instead, read the full sentence first, guess the meaning from nearby words, and keep going. You can check the meaning after finishing the passage.

✏️

Answer these questions

From the passage: (1) What is Meera's father's job? (2) Where does her mother teach? (3) How old is Karthik? (4) What does Meera do on Saturdays? Try to answer without re-reading the passage.

Challenge Round

Your own passage

Now write or say your own passage about yourself. Use this structure: (1) Name and age. (2) Family. (3) Daily routine. (4) What you like. (5) What you do on weekends. Try to write at least 5 sentences.
