எளிய கூட்டல் — 5 வரை
Simple Addition — Within 5
Add small numbers using lower beads. Watch how beads go up as you add. 2 + 3 = ? Let the abacus show you!
Let's Learn
What you will learn today
Add two numbers with a sum of 5 or less using the abacus.
Now the exciting part — using the abacus to ADD! Addition on the abacus is physical and visual. You push beads up to add. Let's start with sums that fit in lower beads (5 or less).
Quick recap
You can show any number 0 to 20 on the abacus. Now let's make the abacus DO something — add! Addition on the abacus is push more beads up.
How addition works on the abacus
It is simple: start with the first number. Then push up MORE lower beads equal to the second number. Count all beads touching the bar — that is your answer!
- Step 1: Clear the abacus
- Step 2: Show the first number (push lower beads up)
- Step 3: Push UP that many more lower beads for the second number
- Step 4: Count all beads touching the bar — that is the answer
📐 1 + 1 = 2
Start: clear. Show 1 (push 1 bead up). Add 1 more bead up. Now 2 beads touch the bar. Answer: 2.
📐 2 + 2 = 4
Start: clear. Show 2 (2 beads up). Add 2 more. 4 beads touching the bar. Answer: 4.
📐 2 + 3 = 5
Start: show 2. Add 3 more lower beads. But you have used 4 lower beads... and you need 1 more! Push all lower beads DOWN and push the upper bead DOWN instead. Upper bead = 5. Answer: 5!
When you reach exactly 5
If you fill up all 4 lower beads and still need 1 more, that means you have reached 5. Pull all lower beads DOWN and push the upper bead DOWN. The upper bead = 5.
Forgetting the swap
When 4 lower beads are up and you need to add 1 more to reach 5, do NOT try to push a 5th lower bead (there is none!). This is your signal to swap: pull all lower beads down and push the upper bead down instead.
Try: 1 + 3 = ?
Use the abacus to add 1 + 3. What is the answer?
🎯 Goal: Show the number 4
Try: 2 + 3 = ?
Use the abacus to add 2 + 3. Watch out — you may need the swap!
🎯 Goal: Show the number 5
Challenge Round
Add 4 + 1 — the tricky swap
Solve 4 + 1 on the abacus. Start with 4 lower beads, then add 1 more. Watch what happens — there is no room for a 5th lower bead!
🎯 Goal: Show the number 5
You can now add on the abacus! Push more beads up to add. When you reach 5, swap to the upper bead. You are doing real mental arithmetic! Next: we add numbers where the total goes above 5.
