The complete guide — all 10 numbers

Here is every single-digit number and how it looks on the abacus:

  • 0 → clear (no beads touching bar)
  • 1 → 1 lower bead up
  • 2 → 2 lower beads up
  • 3 → 3 lower beads up
  • 4 → 4 lower beads up
  • 5 → upper bead down only
  • 6 → upper bead down + 1 lower bead up
  • 7 → upper bead down + 2 lower beads up
  • 8 → upper bead down + 3 lower beads up
  • 9 → upper bead down + 4 lower beads up

0 to 4 — lower beads only

None of these use the upper bead. Each adds one more lower bead.

All of these have the upper bead down. The lower beads count the extra amount.

How to read any number in 2 steps

Step 1: Is the upper bead down? Yes → add 5. No → add 0. Step 2: Count lower beads touching the bar. Add that number. You are done!

📐 Reading challenge — what is this number?

Upper bead is DOWN. 2 lower beads are touching the bar. Step 1: upper bead down = 5. Step 2: 2 lower beads = 2. Total: 5 + 2 = 7!

The most confused pair: 4 and 5

4 lower beads up = 4. Upper bead down (no lower beads) = 5. These look similar but are completely different! Always check: is the upper bead down? Yes = 5 or more. No = 4 or less.
