The Upper Bead Means 5

The upper bead is special — it is worth 5 all by itself! Learn why we use the upper bead for 5 instead of five lower beads.

Let's Learn

What you will learn today

Understand why the upper bead is worth 5 — and use it to show the number 5.

Lower beads are worth 1 each, but there are only 4 of them. How do we show 5? We cannot use a 5th lower bead — there isn't one! That is where the upper bead helps. It is worth 5 all by itself.

🔁

Quick recap

In the last lesson, you used lower beads to count 1, 2, 3, and 4. Each lower bead touching the bar = 1. Now: what about 5? Lower beads run out at 4!

📐 The problem — trying to show 5 with lower beads

Push ALL 4 lower beads up. You get 4. There is no 5th lower bead. You cannot show 5 this way!

4

The solution — the upper bead

To show 5, we use the upper bead. Push the upper bead DOWN toward the bar. When it touches the bar, the abacus shows 5. One bead, worth 5!

📐 Showing 5 — upper bead pushed down

Upper bead is down (touching the bar). No lower beads are up. The abacus shows 5. Clean and simple!

5

Compare 4 and 5

4 uses all lower beads (cluttered!). 5 uses just the upper bead (much cleaner!). This is the clever design of the abacus.

💡

Direction matters!

Upper bead pushed DOWN = shows 5. Upper bead pushed UP (away from bar) = cleared, not counting. Push DOWN to use it. Push UP to clear it.

மேலே = சுத்தம். கீழே = 5.

💡

Clearing the upper bead

Already pushed the upper bead down (showing 5)? To clear it, push it back UP away from the bar. Practice this: push DOWN (shows 5) → push UP (shows 0). You will use this skill in every lesson from now on!

🔍

The most common Level 1 mistake

Many children push all 4 lower beads up to try to show 5. But 4 lower beads = 4, not 5! There are only 4 lower beads per rod. For 5, you MUST use the upper bead — push it DOWN.

✏️

Your turn — show 5

Show the number 5 on the abacus. Remember: no lower beads!

🎯 Goal: Show the number 5

Challenge Round

Now show zero — cleared!

You showed 5 with the upper bead. Now clear the abacus to show 0. Push the upper bead back UP, and make sure all lower beads are DOWN.

🎯 Goal: Show the number 0

🌟

You learned the upper bead trick — 1 upper bead = 5. This is the most important idea in abacus counting. Next lesson: combine the upper bead with lower beads to show 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Next: Numbers 6 to 9

Key Points

முக்கிய குறிப்புகள்

  • The upper bead lives ABOVE the dividing bar
  • Push the upper bead DOWN to use it
  • 1 upper bead = 5
