Simple Subtraction — Within 9
~11 min
Subtraction on the abacus is just addition in reverse — pull beads away from the bar. Learn to remove lower beads and push the upper bead back up to subtract from any single-digit number.
By the end of this lesson you will be able to— இந்த பாடத்தின் இறுதியில்
- Understand that subtraction = removing beads from the active position
- Subtract 1–4 by pushing lower beads back down
- Subtract 5 by pushing the upper bead back up
- Subtract values like 6–9 by combining upper and lower bead removal
Let's Learn
What you will learn today
Subtract small numbers on the abacus by pulling beads down — when no complement rules are needed.
You know how to add on the abacus — you push beads UP. Subtraction is the exact reverse. To subtract, you pull beads DOWN (away from the bar). Let's learn how!
Quick recap
Adding = push beads UP toward the bar. Each bead touching the bar counts. Now: subtracting = pull beads DOWN away from the bar. Beads away from the bar stop counting.
How subtraction works on the abacus
Subtraction is simple when you have the right beads to remove. Here is the rule:
- Step 1: Show the starting number
- Step 2: Remove (pull DOWN) as many lower beads as the number you are subtracting
- Step 3: Count all beads still touching the bar — that is your answer
📐 4 − 1 = 3
Start: show 4 (4 lower beads up). Remove 1: pull 1 lower bead DOWN. Now 3 lower beads touch the bar. Answer: 3.
📐 4 − 2 = 2
Start: show 4 (4 lower beads up). Remove 2: pull 2 lower beads DOWN. Now 2 lower beads touch the bar. Answer: 2.
📐 9 − 4 = 5
Start: show 9 (upper bead down + all 4 lower beads up). Remove 4: pull all 4 lower beads DOWN. What is left? Upper bead only — and that equals 5. Answer: 5.
📐 7 − 2 = 5
7 = upper bead (5) + 2 lower beads. Remove 2: pull both lower beads DOWN. Left with: upper bead only = 5. Answer: 5.
Removing upper bead to subtract 5
If you need to subtract exactly 5, push the upper bead UP away from the bar. The upper bead was worth 5 — removing it subtracts 5. Example: 8 − 5 = 3. Show 8 (upper + 3 lower). Push upper bead UP (−5). Left: 3 lower beads = 3.
What if you can't subtract directly?
Sometimes you cannot remove lower beads because you don't have enough. For example: you show 3 and need to subtract 4 — but only 3 lower beads are there! You cannot pull 4 down. This is where Level 2 complement rules come in. For now, all our subtractions are cases where you CAN remove directly.
Try: 5 − 3 = ?
Show 5 (upper bead down only). Now subtract 3. Pull 3 lower beads DOWN... but wait — where are the lower beads? For subtracting 3 from 5, you need to first understand that you'll use the upper bead + add lower beads. Actually, try this: show 8 first, then subtract 3.
🎯 Goal: Show the number 5
Try: 9 − 5 = 4
Show 9 on the abacus. Then subtract 5 by pushing the upper bead UP. What is left?
🎯 Goal: Show the number 4
Challenge Round
7 − 4 = 3
Show 7 on the abacus, then subtract 4. Think carefully about which beads to remove.
🎯 Goal: Show the number 3
Subtraction on the abacus means removing beads. Pull lower beads DOWN to subtract 1–4. Push the upper bead UP to subtract 5. When you can't subtract directly — that is Level 2! Next: the Level 1 Master Practice where you show everything you know.

Key Points
- ✓Subtraction = pull beads DOWN (away from the bar)
- ✓To subtract 1–4: pull that many lower beads down
- ✓To subtract 5: push the upper bead UP (away from bar)
- ✓9 − 4 = 5: remove all 4 lower beads, upper bead (5) remains
- ✓When you can't subtract directly → Level 2 complement rules will help
