The pattern for 6 to 9
For any number from 6 to 9, always start by pushing the upper bead DOWN (that gives you 5). Then push extra lower beads up to get the remaining amount.
- Step 1: Push the upper bead DOWN (you now have 5)
- Step 2: Count how much more you need (e.g., for 7: you need 2 more)
- Step 3: Push that many lower beads UP

Upper bead DOWN (=5). Then push 1 lower bead UP (=1). Total: 5 + 1 = 6.

6, 7, 8, 9 — spot the pattern!
All four have the upper bead down. Each one adds one more lower bead. Can you see how the abacus grows from 6 to 9?
Quick trick to read any number 6–9
Upper bead = 5. Count the lower beads touching the bar. Add them together. Done! For example: upper bead + 3 lower beads = 5 + 3 = 8.
Don't forget the upper bead!
When building 6, 7, 8, or 9, children sometimes forget to push the upper bead down first. If you only push lower beads, you will show 1, 2, 3, or 4 — not 6–9. Always start with the upper bead for these numbers.
